Landing page editor: edit, sync and publish a landing page

The landing page editor is the page for one landing page. Open it from Create > Landing Pages by selecting a page title. It shows a preview and a side panel, and it holds every action that changes the page. For the list of pages, see Landing Pages.

Problem and intended user

The ecommerce manager (the person who runs the store) gets a page written by AI and must decide whether it is ready for visitors. A page that is nearly right still needs a new headline, a moved section or a removed claim, and some of those edits happen in Shopify, not in Nexus. The media buyer (the person who runs your paid ads) needs a live address to send ads to, and needs to take it down when an offer ends.

Current workflow

Without Nexus, the ecommerce manager edits the page in the Shopify theme editor or in a page-builder app. When an offer ends, someone hides the page in the Shopify admin and sets up a redirect by hand.

Prerequisites

  • A landing page exists. See Landing Pages.
  • A page that is on Shopify, for Sync from Shopify. The button stays off for an archived page and for a page that is not on Shopify yet. Archive needs a published page.
  • Nexus knows your store's style, for Remodel with AI. The card shows a notice and stays locked until it does.
  • Credits for Remodel with AI. The card shows the cost, and the Billing page shows current values. See Credits and top-ups.
  • Optional: Shopify's Theme Access app, for the Full-width layout. Only a Full-width page is a set of blocks in the Shopify theme editor. See Theme Access.

How Nexus works

Nexus stores the page as a list of sections. You edit the text, the order and the sections yourself. AI writes only when you ask for it: in Remodel with AI, and in Use AI to write it when you add a section. You approve every change: a draft goes live when you select Publish, or when you deploy an ad that the page was made for. Edits to a published page go live when you save. Nexus reads the live page in Shopify before it writes to it, so it does not overwrite what someone changed in Shopify.

WARNING

Publishing makes the page reachable at once. Archiving takes it off your storefront. Deleting cannot be undone.

Preview the page

The Preview card shows the page. Switch between Desktop and Mobile. The toolbar offers Source, which opens Page source with Copy source. It also offers Theme editor or Edit in Shopify, which opens the page in Shopify in a new tab, and Open on your storefront when the page has a storefront address.

When Nexus cannot draw the page as your storefront does, the card is called Approximate preview and gives the reason. Then your theme's header and footer are not shown, although the published page still has them. If the preview fails, it reads "We could not render this page. Reload to try again."

Edit the sections

  1. Open the Sections card and select Show sections.
  2. Drag a row by its handle, or use the up and down arrows (Move up and Move down).
  3. Select the pencil to edit the fields of a section. A counter shows how many characters are left when a field is near its limit.
  4. Select the bin (Remove) to drop a section. It moves to Removed, where Restore brings it back.
  5. Select Save to keep the changes, or Discard.

When the Sections card shows numbered sections with no names, select Label sections. AI then names them. A limit applies. The button does not show once the sections have names.

The section that holds the Add to cart form and the section that holds the page heading can move but cannot be removed. A field with formatting says that formatting is removed when you save. A published page changes when you save. A draft changes only the draft.

Add a section

  1. Select Add section below the list, or the plus on a row to add after it.
  2. Search or choose a type: Text, Call to action, Guarantee, Newsletter, Hero banner, Product, Image with text, Gallery, Features, Steps, Details, Comparison, Reviews, Numbers or FAQ. Types that need photos show only when the page has enough. Product shows only when the page has an Add to cart form.
  3. Set the options the type offers, such as Layout, Text position or Images.
  4. Optional: turn on Use AI to write it, and say what it should say. Off, the section starts with placeholder text for you to replace. A Reviews section on a page for one product starts with real quotes from your customers' reviews when it finds any.
  5. Select Add section.

Save or discard other edits first: the page says "Save or discard your changes to add a section."

Remodel with AI

In Remodel with AI, write what to change under What should change?, then select Remodel page. Nexus keeps everything you do not mention. Progress shows Reading your store, Remodelling the page and Preparing the preview, and it continues if you leave the page. The Last remodel report lists what was Changed, Kept and Not done.

On a published page, a remodel does not change the live page. The card reads Remodel ready to review. Use Live page and Remodel in the preview, then select Publish remodel or Discard.

Publish, archive and delete

  • Publish opens Publish landing page and asks for a Page URL after /pages/. Use letters, numbers and hyphens. A URL that starts with "nexus-" is reserved. The address cannot change once the page is live.
  • Archive takes the page off your storefront. Where possible, its address redirects to the product, the collection or your homepage. The page stays in Shopify as a hidden page, and you can publish it again.
  • Delete opens Delete landing page and removes the page from Nexus. When the page was sent to Shopify, it also removes it from your Shopify admin and, if it was live, from your storefront.

Edit the page in the Shopify theme editor

A Full-width page is one section of your theme, and each part of the page is a block of that section. In the Shopify theme editor you can move a block, hide it with the eye icon, remove it and edit its settings. Open the editor from the Theme editor or Edit in Shopify button in the preview toolbar.

SettingWhat it does
Text settingsEach heading, paragraph and button label is a setting. A setting with bold, italic or a link keeps its formatting.
Link settingsEach button link is a setting.
Image settingsEach photo is a setting. A photo you swap keeps the size of the one it replaces.
Use a theme color scheme and Color schemeIn each block. Tick the box, then pick one of your theme's color schemes for that block only. They show when your theme has color schemes.
Theme colorsIn the section. One setting for each color the page reads from your theme. Empty follows your theme. A set value overrides it for this page only.
Theme fontsIn the section. A Use a custom heading font or Use a custom body font box plus a font picker. The picker applies only while its box is ticked. The fonts follow your theme otherwise.
Color and font settingsA page with its own colors or fonts adds a setting for each, up to a limit.

A Basic layout page is not a set of blocks. You cannot move or hide its parts in the theme editor.

A page that was published before this was possible gets these settings the next time Nexus writes it. Nexus changes nothing until then.

Sync from Shopify

If someone edits the published page in Shopify, select Sync from Shopify. A window of the same name opens and Nexus reads the page back from Shopify. The button is off, and says why, for an archived page and for a page that is not on Shopify yet. A dot on the button shows that the page changed in Shopify since the last sync.

If nothing changed, the window says "Shopify matches what Nexus has. Nothing to bring in, and nothing was changed." If something changed, it reads "Ready to bring your Shopify version in". Select Bring the Shopify version in. Nexus then uses the Shopify version as the page: "The Shopify version is now the one Nexus keeps."

Nexus brings in the texts and the order of the blocks. It lists everything else with the reason it did not bring it in. The window sorts the list under these headings:

HeadingWhat it lists
Values brought in from ShopifyTexts that someone changed in Shopify
Sections reordered in ShopifyA new order of the blocks
Hidden in ShopifyBlocks someone hid
Removed in ShopifyBlocks someone removed
Sections added in ShopifyBlocks that Nexus did not make
Shopify values Nexus did not bring inValues that Nexus cannot take, with the reason, for example set only in Shopify or Nexus has no field for it

Each row names the section and the kind of value: Text, Long text, Formatted text, Link, Photo, Colour, Font, Shown or hidden, Colour scheme or Use a theme colour scheme. A color, a font, a link, a photo, a hidden block, a removed block and a color scheme set in Shopify stay in Shopify. Nexus does not bring them in, and the Nexus preview does not show them.

When the page changed in Shopify

Nexus reads the live page before it writes to it. It also checks a page that is on Shopify in the background and when you open the page. If the page changed in Shopify, a banner reads This page changed in Shopify, and a card in the Sections list shows how many sections are hidden or removed in Shopify. Each such section carries a Hidden in Shopify or Removed in Shopify badge. Turn a hidden section back on with the eye icon in the Shopify theme editor. Add a removed one back with Add block there.

When a save or a publish meets a change in Shopify, Nexus stops and changes nothing. The window then offers a choice:

  • Finish the update completes an update that did not finish, or moves the page to your current theme.
  • Bring the Shopify version in takes the Shopify texts and order as the stored page.
  • Keep the Nexus version writes the page again from Nexus. The window lists what this drops first, by section and value. It replaces the Nexus section file in your theme, and it can replace sections that someone added to the page template in Shopify.

Not every choice shows for every case. When a remodel would replace changes made in Shopify, Publish anyway? lists them and asks you to confirm with Publish anyway. If a save of yours was not kept because Shopify changed first, the notice Shopify changed this page first lists your edits so you can make them again.

Exact output

A page with a header, a preview and a side panel.

The header shows the title, a status badge, Full-width or Basic layout, Previous generator where it applies, and the handle. Its buttons are Sync from Shopify, Publish or Archive, and Delete. On a wide screen, Hide panel folds the side panel into a rail, and Show panel opens it again. The side panel holds these cards:

CardWhat it holds
SectionsThe ordered sections, with edit, move, remove and add controls, and a badge on a section that is hidden or removed in Shopify
ProductThe photo, title, price and variant count, with Open in Shopify and Product insights. It shows when the page has a product.
Source adThe ad the page continues, with View ad. It shows when the page has a source ad.
Remodel with AIThe prompt, progress and the report

Expected value and measurement

Editing in one place with a preview can help you check a page before visitors see it. A remodel can help you try a new angle without a rebuild.

To check, compare ads that point at the page before and after an edit. Read spend and revenue on Performance > Ad performance, and conversion in your own analytics. See Ad performance. You cannot isolate one edit from other changes to ads, offers or traffic that ran at the same time.

Limitations and exceptions

  • AI writes remodels and new sections and can be wrong. Read each one before you publish.
  • A page made by the previous generator cannot be drawn here or published as it is. Remodel it first. Its sections open for editing after that.
  • Sections stay read-only while a remodel waits for your decision, while Nexus rewrites the page, and when the page is archived. The card says why. Remodel with AI is also off while the page is archived.
  • If a page cannot be split into sections, the card reads "Nexus cannot divide this page into sections." If the sections do not load, it reads "Nexus could not read this page's sections." Select Retry.
  • A save can fail. The card says "This page changed while you were editing it. Reload to get the current version." and offers Reload.
  • Sync from Shopify explains a refusal, for example "The page or its section is missing in Shopify". If it cannot reach Shopify, it shows Could not reach Shopify. It brings in texts and the order of blocks only.
  • A page that Nexus is writing at that moment answers "This page is being updated right now. Try again in a moment." If a write stops half way, the page can stay locked for a short time. Try again.
  • If you save in Shopify at the same moment as Nexus writes the page, one of the two saves can be lost. Sync after a Nexus update, and check the page.
  • A theme editor tab that you opened before Nexus last updated the page can undo that update when you save it. Nexus then lists what the tab changed. A section that Nexus added meanwhile shows as Removed in Shopify until you add it back.
  • A color that two roles share changes for both. A photo that you swap keeps the size of the first one, so a photo with other proportions can look cropped or stretched.
  • A Theme colors setting sits on the page. A color scheme set on an element inside the page can win over it. A Color scheme that you tick in a block applies in part when the page sets its own colors on that block: untick the box to undo it. A theme that does not use the usual color scheme classes shows no change.
  • Colors, links, photos and fonts set in Shopify are not in the Nexus preview or in a new version that AI writes. Nexus carries them while the new version keeps the same part in the same place.
  • Sections that you add to the page template in Shopify do not follow a change of theme. A page that Nexus could not move to a new theme stays on the old one until you choose Finish the update or Nexus writes the page again.
  • You cannot reorder a page in Shopify when Nexus cannot divide it into sections, when it has more sections than Shopify allows blocks, or when it is a Basic layout page.
  • Archive and Delete remove the page template from your theme, including sections that you added to it in Shopify.
  • A refused publish can leave an ad that points at a page that is not live. Publish the page again, or change the ad.
  • If the page does not load, you see "We couldn't load this landing page. It may have been deleted, or the connection dropped. Reload to try again." Contact support if it stays. See Contact support.

Demo Mode

In Demo Mode, saving sections, adding a section, Label sections, publishing or discarding a remodel, and Remodel page are blocked and show a message. Publish, Archive and Delete close and save nothing. Sync from Shopify says that nothing changed. See Demo Mode.
