Install Nexus and start your setup

You install Nexus from Shopify and open it inside Shopify Admin. The first time you open it, Nexus shows a short welcome screen. You answer two questions and press Start your setup.

Before you install

You need a Shopify store. Nexus runs inside Shopify Admin, so your store connects when you install. You do not connect it again later.

Shopify shows a permission screen when you install. It lists every permission in full. In plain words, Nexus asks to read the following:

AreaWhat Nexus reads it for
ProductsYour product catalog.
OrdersYour orders. Nexus asks for your full order history, not only recent orders.
CustomersYour customer list, to build customer segments.
Analytics and reportsStore analytics and Shopify's sales report, to rank your best sellers.
ThemesDetails of your theme.

Nexus also asks to write to your store: customer tags and metafields, pages, files and URL redirects. Read the Shopify permission screen before you accept.

Open Nexus for the first time

Open Nexus in Shopify Admin. Nexus does not open the dashboard yet. It opens a screen that says Welcome to Nexus.

The card under the heading shows your store name, your store domain, the Connected badge, your timezone and your currency. Nexus reads these from Shopify. You cannot change them on this screen. Your brand name starts from your Shopify store name. You can rename your brand later in Settings > General.

A short message tells you that Nexus is about to read your products, orders and reviews. The fields appear when the message ends.

Answer the two questions

  1. Open Industry (optional). Pick the closest match, or keep the first option, Skip — work it out from my products.
  2. Check Average product margin (%). Change the number if you know your own margin.

Industry. Nexus checks your Shopify product categories first. If the check takes more than a moment, the two fields lock and the hint reads Checking what your Shopify products say you sell…. If Nexus finds a match, it selects the industry and says so: I read this from your Shopify product categories. Change it if I got it wrong. If it finds no match, the field stays on the skip option. If you skip the field, Nexus works out your industry from your products after they import.

Average product margin (%). Nexus fills in a typical starting figure for the industry you pick. The text under the field says which. A ballpark is enough. Nexus uses this figure to turn revenue into profit in the numbers it reports. A figure you type is never overwritten when you pick an industry later.

Start your setup

Press Start your setup. The button reads Starting… while Nexus creates your workspace and begins to import your store. The import runs in the background, and the setup wizard opens straight away.

If setup fails for another reason, a red banner titled Setup failed shows the message. Press Start your setup again.

Setup uses no credits.

If Nexus says your Shopify store email is missing

A red banner titled Shopify store email is missing means Nexus could not read a contact email from Shopify. Setup cannot start until your store has one.

  1. Open Shopify Admin and go to Settings > Store details.
  2. Enter a store contact email and save it.
  3. Return to Nexus and reload the page.
  4. Press Start your setup again.

If setup stopped halfway

You may see a warning banner titled Finish setting up your store. It means Nexus saved your store details, but setup did not finish the last time. The agent message reads Let’s pick this back up. Check the two answers and press Start your setup again. Until setup completes, your insights stay generic.

If you see "We couldn't connect to Nexus"

Your store is installed and nothing is lost. Nexus could not load your account at that moment. This is a connection problem, not a setup problem.

  1. Press Try again. The button reads Retrying… while it works.
  2. If the error stays, press Reload.
  3. If it still stays, close Nexus and open it again from Shopify Admin.

If you contact support, copy the line after Details: into your message. It helps the support team find the cause. See Contact support.

What happens next

After you press Start your setup, the wizard opens. It asks a few questions while your data imports. Continue with The setup wizard.
